Shell Midden in Gungok-ri, Haenam, an Iron Age living site that even yielded Chinese coins
Hard plain pottery, iron tools, stone tools, bone and antler tools, oracle bones, ornaments and even Huoquan, a Chinese coin, were found here, showing how people lived at the time. On the hilltop, a round house site 350–360 cm across, 6 post holes, and a pottery kiln site were also confirmed.
Shell Midden in Gungok-ri, Haenam, a link between dolmen society and jar-coffin society
The midden began to build up in the early 1st century BC and continued until around the 3rd century AD, and it represents the early Iron Age in the southern Korean Peninsula. This excavation revealed an intermediate stage in Jeonnam between the Bronze Age dolmen society and the jar-coffin burial society of the tomb period. It is also a south coast site that can be compared with the Gimhae Shell Midden, the Ungcheon Shell Midden and the Neukdo site in Samcheonpo.
