Black Pine Forest in Songho-ri, Haenam in detail
Black Pine Forest in Songho-ri, Haenam: seaside pines also called 'bear pine' and 'black pine'
The tree is called the sea pine because it grows along the coast. It is also called 'bear pine' because its needles are tougher than those of ordinary pines, and 'black pine' because its bark is darker. It resists sea wind and salt, so it is often grown as forest to block wind or tides on the coast.
Black Pine Forest in Songho-ri, Haenam: a forest that grew on its own, not planted by people
The forest is 7.5–38 m wide with an area of 16,474 m², and the trees are 8–15 m tall. When 92 sample trees were measured, those with a girth of 41–120 cm at chest height were the most common, at about 59%. The girths are evenly spread, so the forest is seen as one that grew naturally rather than being planted. It also blocks the wind to protect farmland and helps preserve the village's environment and scenery.
