Uldolmok Skywalk in detail
Uldolmok Skywalk: a path over the sea built to honor the Battle of Myeongnyang
Uldolmok, where the skywalk sits, is the sea where General Yi Sunsin defeated the Japanese forces in the Battle of Myeongnyang. At its narrowest, the strait is 293 m wide and 19 m deep. The current is fast and loud, as if the sea were crying, so it was named Uldolmok, or Myeongnyang in Chinese characters. The skywalk was built to honor the Great Victory of Myeongnyang, in which 13 Joseon navy ships fought and defeated 133 Japanese ships.
Uldolmok Skywalk: its structure and the lit sculpture of a warship sail
It has a straight length of 32 m and a width of 2 m, and it is laid out in a circle modeled on the Ganggangsullae dance. The floor is laid with wire mesh, reinforced glass and natural wood, so you can walk while looking down. The entrance and exit are separate, so the paths of people coming and going do not overlap. Between the entrance and exit is a sculpture modeled on the sail of a panel-roofed warship, and it lights up at night.
