Haechang Brewery: from the builder of the 1927 residence to the present owners
The residence and garden were built by Shibata Hikohei, who was born in Gunma Prefecture, Japan, and settled in Haenam by way of Gangjin. After liberation, Mr. Mun, the eldest son, who founded Samhwa Elementary School in Haenam, lived there. He is believed to have obtained the brewery license in 1961. Later Hwang Ui-gwon took it over and brewed for over 30 years. Since 2008, the couple O Byeong-in and Bak Ria have lived there and run it.
Haechang Brewery: the taste of Haechang makgeolli and the name 'makgeolli'
Haechang makgeolli is not strongly sweet and brings out the natural aroma and taste of its ingredients. There are two explanations of the name makgeolli: 'liquor just now strained' and 'liquor roughly strained'. After the brewery garden was featured on KBS in 2011 and 2012 and in the Chosun Ilbo newspaper in 2013, more people came from far away.
