Dojangsa Temple in detail
Dojangsa Temple: how the temple's name became Dojangsa Temple by way of Seongjusa
It first appears in late Joseon records under the name 'Dojangsa Temple (道藏寺)', so it is regarded as a temple founded in the late Joseon period. A 1935 record of its reconstruction writes it as 'Seongjusa', so it was called Seongjusa until about then. The current name seems to have become fixed after the 1950s. When the main Buddha hall was repaired in 1935, a gilt-bronze Buddha statue was found, but where it is now is unknown. source 1
Dojangsa Temple: a north-facing temple with a bamboo grove against the wind
The temple faces north, so a bamboo grove was placed by the front yard of the main Buddha hall. The grove blocks the view from outside and also shuts out the north wind. Unlike most temples, you enter not from the front but from the west side. The grounds have two buildings: the main Buddha hall and the monks' quarters. source 1
Dojangsa Temple: halfway up Botasan Mountain, overlooking reclaimed land cut off from the sea
Dojangsa Temple is halfway up Botasan Mountain, about 1 km up to the northeast from Naesan Village in Hwangsan-myeon. The site once bordered the sea, but the Yeongsangang River estuary dam reclamation project has now cut it off from the sea. One story says it was built during the reign of King Myeongjong of Goryeo (1170), but several records point to a founding in the late Joseon period. source 2
