Myeongnyang Nodo: how the Jeolla Right Naval Headquarters was set up and got its name
In 1440, in the early Joseon period, the Jeolla Naval Headquarters, a base for the navy, was set up in Munnae-myeon, where Myeongnyang Nodo is. In 1465 (the 11th year of King Sejo), it was raised to the Jeolla Naval Commander's Headquarters. In 1479 (the 10th year of King Seongjong), a separate Jeolla Left Naval Commander's Headquarters was set up at Naeryepo in Suncheon, now Yeosu. The base here then came to be called the Jeolla Right Naval Commander's Headquarters, or the Jeolla Right Naval Headquarters for short.
Myeongnyang Nodo: Ganggangsullae and women's farming songs handed down in Usuyeong
Usuyeong Ganggangsullae (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage) and the women's farming songs have been passed down through generations in Usuyeong. Uldolmok, the sea in front, is the site of the Battle of Myeongnyang and is counted among the 3 great victory sites of the Joseon navy. The channel of about 2 km between Hakdong-ri, Munnae-myeon and Nokjin on Jindo is about 20 m deep.
