Haenam Yun Cheol-ha Old House in detail
Haenam Yun Cheol-ha Old House, a south-facing tile-roofed house with a 1906 ridge-beam record
This south-facing tile-roofed house in Choho-ri, Hyeonsan-myeon, has a low hill behind it and looks out over fields. A ridge-beam record found in the inner quarters shows that the house was built in 1906 (the 10th year of Gwangmu), and the men's quarters, detached quarters and main gatehouse are believed to date from about the same time. Past the large pavilion tree and small stream at the village entrance, several tile-roofed houses stand together, and this is the largest of them.
Haenam Yun Cheol-ha Old House, the layout of the inner quarters, men's quarters and detached quarters
Past the main gate, the gate yard leads straight to the yard of the outer quarters, where the single-row outer quarters sit on a high stone terrace. Past the middle gatehouse behind the men's quarters, the L-shaped inner quarters and the detached quarters, shaped like an inverted L, face each other across the inner yard. At the west end of the outer quarters is a pharmacy room, with a small wooden ledge in front of it.
Haenam Yun Cheol-ha Old House, gardens in two yards, stone terraces, and visits
There are gardens in two places, the men's quarters yard and the inner yard, and the one in the men's quarters yard is carefully laid out with junipers, bamboo, persimmon trees, firs, royal azaleas and garden stones. The stone terrace of the men's quarters yard is built of dressed stone and that of the inner yard of natural stone, both laid in neat courses. It is a privately owned house, so it is generally open to visitors, but visits may be restricted depending on the owner's circumstances.
