Haenam Ongnyeobong Earthen Fortress in detail
Haenam Ongnyeobong Earthen Fortress, a pogok-style fortress linking three peaks
The fortress starts at the top of Ongnyeobong Peak and runs to Seongmoebong Peak on the north slope and Maebong Peak on the west slope, built in the valley-enclosing style that wraps around the valley. It is where Namyeon-ri in Haenam-eup meets Chang-ri in Samsan-myeon, and Ongnyeobong Peak is about 200 m above sea level. Sections built only of earth mix with sections that have a stone core covered with earth. On Seongmoebong Peak remains a wall thought to have been built of stone in a later period.
Haenam Ongnyeobong Earthen Fortress: the wall toward Surijae and the command post site on the summit
The wall from the top of Ongnyeobong Peak to Surijae is 166 m long, 3.5 m wide and 19 m high, and a few traces remain of stones laid on top of the earthwork. In the valley that climbs from Surijae to Ongnyeobong Peak, the fortress was reinforced in about three steps. On the summit are traces of a square stone platform thought to be the site of a command post (將台), and there are also stone structures on the hill below it.
Haenam Ongnyeobong Earthen Fortress: pottery shards from the Surijae shell mound
In a collapsed section at the top of Surijae, a layer of shells about 2 m wide and 5 m high is exposed. This shell mound, formed after the Iron Age, has yielded fragments of large jar-shaped pottery and of reddish-brown and gray-blue hard pottery. Based on these finds and the building method, it is seen as a fortress site from the Three Kingdoms or Mahan period, and there is also a group of ancient tombs in nearby Namyeon-ri Village.
