Haenam Jeong Myeong-sik House in detail
Haenam Jeong Myeong-sik House, a late Joseon upper-class house where the men's quarters and servants' quarters remain
Known as 'Vice Minister Yi's House,' it shows what upper-class homes in this area looked like in the late Joseon period. It originally had inner quarters and a shrine as well, but only two buildings, the men's quarters and the servants' quarters, remain today.
Haenam Jeong Myeong-sik House, 7-bay outer quarters with an 1871 ridge-beam record
The men's quarters is a straight building 7 bays wide at the front and 2 bays deep, and a ridge-beam record says it was built in 1871 (the 8th year of King Gojong). Its rooms sit side by side in two rows, front and back, with heated-floor rooms on both sides of the wooden-floored main hall in the middle. The lattice-window doors that separate the wooden-floored main hall from the rooms are finely crafted.
Haenam Jeong Myeong-sik House, the servants' quarters with a raised main gate and openwork decoration
The servants' quarters is a straight building with a raised main gate in the middle, and the openwork pattern carved into the lintel above the gate stands out. The men's quarters is a plain bracketless house with square pillars set on natural foundation stones, and its frame has 2 high inner columns and 5 purlins.
