Haenam Bangchunjeong Pavilion in detail
Haenam Bangchunjeong Pavilion: the Suncheon Kim family's place of learning, continued from the Samsangsa Shrine site
This site once had Samsangsa Shrine, which honored ancestors of the Suncheon Kim family, including Jeolje Kim Jong-seo. The shrine was torn down in 1868 when Heungseon Daewongun ordered the Confucian academies abolished. Bangchunjeong is a place of learning of the Suncheon Kim family founded in 1698. The ridge-beam text on the support under the main ridge purlin shows that the present building was rebuilt in 1871.
Haenam Bangchunjeong Pavilion: its platform, foundation stones and pillars, and the layout of Bangchun Confucian Academy
The platform is neatly built of dressed stone in four tiers, and large natural stones serve as foundation stones. The pillars are round wooden posts, but the two side corners and the left end of the back rest on round stone pillars. Bangchun Confucian Academy sets the gatehouse and Bangchunjeong on a north–south axis on flat ground, and its grounds also have an inner triple gate and a shrine.
It was built in 1871, the 8th year of King Gojong, led by Kim Jeong-sun and Kim Mun-ik. After the shrine of the Confucian academy was torn down on the order of Daewongun, it was newly built on the site of the old lecture hall.
