Byeongpungsan Mountain in detail

Byeongpungsan Mountain: from Baektojae Pass past the Sujeongdong site to the summit

Hikes on Byeongpungsan Mountain usually start at Baektojae Pass in Manan-ri, Hyeonsan-myeon. Climb the trail beside the quarry for about 30 minutes to reach the Sujeongdong site. Then pass Byeongpung Rock and Tiger Cave in turn to reach the summit, 313.1 m above sea level. From the summit you can look down on the ridges of Duryunsan Mountain and on Gusi Reservoir to the south.

Byeongpungsan Mountain: the ridge to the Geumswaedong site and Gosan Yun Seon-do's tomb

Following the ridge from the summit, you pass several rock cliffs and reach Gatbawi Rock. About 20 minutes down from there, you come to the yard of Mr. Yun Jae-jun's house. Across the forest road and the valley in front of it, about 50 minutes up, is the Geumswaedong site of Haenam Yun Seon-do Historic Sites, a Historic Site. About 30 minutes along the ridge from there are Gosan's north-facing tomb and one stele. Across from the tomb you can see the Chuwondang memorial hall.

Byeongpungsan Mountain: about 6 hours for the full traverse and about 3 hours for the regular course

The full traverse from Baektojae Pass past Sujeongdong, the summit, Mr. Yun Jae-jun's house, Munsocheon Stream, the Geumswaedong site, Yun Seon-do's tomb, the spirit-path stele and the crape myrtle to the Munsodong memorial hall site takes about 6 hours. The regular hiking trail from Mr. Yun Jae-jun's house via Munsocheon Stream, the Geumswaedong site and Yun Seon-do's tomb to the memorial hall site takes about 3 hours. The mountain's name comes from reading the landform of Haenam-eup as 'a jade maiden playing a zither': if Geumgangsan is the fairy and Hosan is the zither, Byeongpungsan Mountain is the folding screen.
